Inform us of a change

A change in your child's state of health of other family changes may have an impact on the payments of the supplements for handicapped children or on the eligibility for the supplements. It is important to take the recommended steps as soon as possible. By doing so, you can ensure that you are receiving all the amounts to which you are entitled and avoid having to repay us any amounts.

Important!

If you receive new information concerning your child's condition while your application is being studied, send it to us online or by mail (Family Allowance case postale) as soon as possible so that we can take it into account.

If you notice that your child's state of health greatly improved or if the medical care for which he or she was deemed eligible to the supplements for handicapped children is no longer necessary, you must inform us.

If your child was deemed eligible for the Supplement for Handicapped Children and that his or her state of health deteriorated, you can consult the eligibility requirements to the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care to determine whether he or she could also be eligible for that Supplement. If you believe that this is the case, we suggest that you file an application for the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care.

If your child was deemed eligible for Tier 2 of the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care and his or her situation deteriorated or worsened, he or she may be eligible for Tier 1 of the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care. If you believe that this is the case, we suggest that you file an application for medical reassessment.

Following a separation, you must update your file. This step allows each eligible parent to obtain his or her portion of Family Allowance payments, including the supplements for handicapped children, but also to avoid for a parent to have to repay overpayments following a change in the family situation.

Consult the Steps to Take in the Event of a Separation to find out the steps to take. You will find a custody calculator to estimate your eligibility for Family Allowance based on the type of custody you have of your child.

Placement or institutionalization of your child by an establishment in the health and social services sector may have an impact on the Family Allowance payment that you receive, including the supplements for handicapped children.

For more information, consult the table on eligibility for Family Allowance according to the type of placement with or without a placement order until the child turns 18, as well as the details concerning the disabled child.

If a change occurs during the year, it is very important that you inform us by telephone as soon as possible. By doing so, you can ensure that you are receiving all the amounts to which you are entitled and avoid having to repay us any amounts.

You can contest a decision rendered by Retraite Québec regarding your eligibility for the supplements for handicapped children. You have 90 days after the date of the decision to file an application for review.

Consult the Contesting a decision section, which specifies the steps to take to contest a decision or file a complaint and the time limits to be expected.

Family Allowance, which includes the supplements for handicapped children, is paid to all eligible families with dependent children under age 18 and who live in Québec. If your family leaves Québec, inform us of your move to avoid having to repay overpayments.

We understand that the death of a child is a deeply moving event. If your child died in Québec, the Directeur de l'état civil will inform us. No further action is required from you. If the death occurred outside Québec, we ask that you call us to inform us. The death of your child has an impact on Family Allowance and, if applicable, the Supplement for Handicapped Children.

We will maintain your Family Allowance payments during the quarter in which the death occurred, regardless of their frequency. If you receive amounts after the quarter, but before you receive the annual notice, the amounts will not be claimed from you.
